Hello,

I bought some pond weed from my local Aquatics shop at the beginning of June, and there must have been some fish eggs on it because a couple of months later I discovered 3 little tiddlers swimming around in my container pond which I have half buried in the ground.

Long story short, 2 of them died because I thought they would survive better indoors, so brought all of them in and put them into a sort of fish bowl. I decided to put the last one back into my container pond, as I figured, they all hatched into that environment, and survived for 2/3 months, so it would probably be the best place for it.

This has proved to be spot on, as my little fish is thriving, about 2 inches now, doing very well. I observe him and feed him a few high quality flakes a day.

However, I have absolutely no idea what kind of fish he is. He started off a brown/bronze colour and now he is dark brown on top mostly and orangey on his bottom half. I'm pretty sure he is a goldfish, but would be interested to know what species, if possible. It may be too early to tell, as I reckon he is only about 4 months old.

What do you think?

Hello and welcome! It looks like a common goldfish that is transitioning from the black/olive color to orange. My guess is that in a few days it will be solid orange.

I think you're right; a goldfish, a wild one at that. I have a bunch (now) in my pond, from a story similar to yours. Went down to the big pond at the end of the street to get some pond weed for feefing the turtles early summer. Put it in a pot to propagate and the next time I noticed there were fry! Like you, didn't know what I had. They stayed there until winter and I brought them all to the basement, just to see exactly what I had. Thought they were some sort of shiner minnow but nope; wild goldfish, more or less translucent brown. I should have taken them BACK to the big pond but didn't; ended up putting them in MY pond. I've been watching to see if ANY turn orange but so far, I think they're all going to be that bronze/brown on top and a little lighter on the belly.

I'll still say 'congrats on your new fish!'
