I just found out what I thought was a 500 gal per hour pump is really a 250 gal pump per hour.water pump. My pond is 310 gallons. It takes only 24 watts that is really good, going 24/7 but am I going to have trouble with my new 30 gal barrel filter hook up. What do you think? RDK

my Tetrapond 425 gph only draws 25 watts.... a 250gph pump is going to have a tuff time feeding an external avove ground filter.

RDK,
I have a 365 gallon pond and I have been using a 700 GPH submersible water pump form Lowe's that seem to work just fine for the filtration of my pond. By the time the water is pumped to the top end of the boi-filter, it may not be 700 GPH.

Happy ponding,

Do you think a 350gph or 500 gph would be big enough to work or am I looking for trouble and just bite the bullet with a 700 gph model? RDK

I'm not really sure how to answer your question. I seem to have enough water flow for the water fall and the adequate filtration of my pond. My pre-filters course filter medium in my skimmer only needs to be rinsed about once a week. I have no scientific formula or information that would tell me if my 700 GPH water pump is to big or to small other than the water flow returning to my pond is not too strong for the fish and plants in my pond.

I would imagine DrDave or DrCase or one of our other knowledgable ponders would be able give you a better answer than me.

Happy ponding,

What kind of problem are you running into with your filter rdk ?
Sure more flow would be good but you do have enough to keep a pond happy

Doctor: I don't even know if I have a problem. It's still very cold here,in Conn. no algee no food for the fish, no plants growing. The 250 gal pump is working ,running a moderate water fall. for a 300 gal pond. Not fast but not slow either. What would I look for if the pump is too small? Should I just wait until things warm up? Please let me know. RDK

anything more than turning your ponds water volume over once an hour is a simple matter of preference...i just wouldnt go much over 2 times an hour...

Sounds like good advice to me. I had alway thought maybe once an hour, but wasn't really sure if it should be personal preference or what.

you have to figure in head heigth...you'd be safe with 500 to 700 gph pump thru a 30 gallon skippy... at 700 gals the water would spend almost 3 minutes in filtration...
