My neighbor has a well, and I was considering having one built as well. I just tested his water, and the results are.. surprising

Ph 4.5
ammonia 0.5+ ppm
Nitrite 0.25 ppm
nitrate 5 ppm ( I think, should check, it was half way on the scale)

Small wonder he killed all his fish last year when the grandfather had the brilliant idea to empty the pond, clean it and refill it with well water and throw the fish back in.

Now low PH, I can understand (acid rain), and I wouldnt be too worried about it for partial water changes. But Im shocked to find fish lethal levels of ammonia and dangerous levels of nitrite in there too. How does that get in to ground water from 20 meter (60 foot) deep? Even so, my filter could handle that doing % wise, small water changes.

But then there are high levels of nitrate as well, Im guessing from agriculture; in fact, far higher levels than in my pond where I measure 0. That makes it pretty pointless to dig a well and regularly replace good pond water with quite awful well water no?

ours tested negative for all except the ph, it was around 5-6 ish. We have a ton of farm land around us, think I will test again mid farming season, will be interesting to see the results.
