my pond is too big to pull out the water lilies and repot them like I have read that you are supposed to do on a yearly basis. What will happen if I just leave them be? Will they die? They are of the hardy variety And all were planted in fabric pots.

They will grow and grow and grow some more and turn into evil monsters and you will wish you had never let them run free! Seriously! Be forewarned!!!

Agree, with j.w lilies left uncheckedwill jump the pots and grow pretty much everywhere it is conducive for them to spread. That being said none of mine are in pots, just kind of allowed them to roam free in about 2’ deep 10’x10’ portion of my pond, where they pretty much stay confined. I do thin them out occasionally....maybe twice in the past 10 years, and the koi try to help out occasionally too.
