Today the UV starlilzer was installed- my first one so how much time will it take to clear the water its a loaded question I know but the pond is 7500 gallons the UV is 40 watts with a 4000 gpm pump redusced to about 3200 gph since the starilizer is good for only 3000 gpm. So the UV says it should cycle ever 3 and 1 half hours so the crux as stated already how long? Should cycle every 2 and 1 half hours plus or minus a hair.

Hello
Well it all depends on a few things
1. how bad is your Algea and is it floating algea
2. how much nutrients are in the water if the algae is out growing the UV.

More then likly it will help but it might not clear the water perfectly.

You need to also work on what is making it grow so fast
IE Nutrients very warm water losts of sun.

I am working on doing the same the algea growth is much worse this year then any other year and don't know why.

Thanks for the reply. On top of the UV I also have 7 bundled of barley straw in the falls that started to work but just couldn't quite take it out. Last night we had a massive rain storm that over flowed the pond. Being so close to Lake Erie rain always brings in algie.

Despite the heave rain last night 5.2 inches we are clearing already. I've cleand the filters twice today. I think this may be the trick may have to up the UV at some point but for now its working Cool! The other part was hanging some black screen over the pond seems to reflect lots of light away.

Hello
Well this for me has been the worst season for algea ever don't know why.
I think the main cause was my UV went out and I took to long to replace it.

And then it got so bad and just replacing the uv was not working.

Started like this
Algea 1.JPG Algea 2.JPG

Bought a new 55 watt UV installed
3 or 4 days uv on 24/4 and very little diffrence
algae still out growing uv

Day 5 started water changes to help remove nutrients and floating algae 30% water changes on both ponds this helped but again not much

then added the Quilting fiber pads that CE suggested to the skimmers and the filters this helped with in a day or 2 and changing pads twice a day saw some significant clearing.
But not great
Then added more plants to the water falls I put them here that way fish and turttles don't get them :0000000057:

Day 14 it is not perfect but hey I can now see fish
Algea 3.JPG Algea 4.JPG

All this just showed me that there is not one simple thing to get rid of or control Algae it took all of the above and 2 weeks to get to where I am now.
Hey I am happy I can see fish and turtles :boldblue:

Its clearing finally! Since the rain stopped I could see the bottom this morning. I've been cleaning the filter media every 12 hours. My filter pads are 1 x 3 with 6 on top of the falls one in the skimmer looks like we are on the track now to a clear pond.

Hello
Man what a pain in the butt Dang rain.
I have heard of people draining a in or so of the pond and let the rain refill not sure if this will help you situation.

When I am expecting rain and that is not often here I add some declor just to help with the toxins.
I use Aqua plus it helps with ammo and nitrites and declors.

This morning the bottom is completely visable cool! The other part I forgot to meanton is that I've added a 6x10 bog on the end of the pond I think that is helping also.

Clear as all new water this morning looks really nice plus all the fish are starting to come when I feed now. All I have to do is get the feeder in place and we are set.
