UV Light on Filter - How to tell when it is out?

Got a pump and UV filter all in one, how can you tell if the UV is actually working? I think mine only comes on when it is submerged in water or is it suppose to always be on?

It is always supposed to be on did you get a uv combo with a pump that says in the water or just the pump supposed to be the only thing in the water .If you know the model and everything you can find info in them on you tube .I have found so many repair guide on there.They even have how to repair some of the pond pumps .

If you just bought it I would take it back but I know that my neighbors I looked at just before and hers is in the pond and when you take it out I could hardly tell the light was working .But when I put it in the water I could see the soft blue light .I have never owned a uv but knew she did so took a walk over to her house to look at hers .I could see hers when i cupped my hand over the viewing window

Then it may be the bulb and know by the people on here that the connectors in most of them are universal and you can get the bulbs on e-bay cheaper
