Using Sump Pump Water in Pond?

I'm trying to cut back on the amount of water I use, and it occurs to me that I'm constantly filling my ponds due to evaporation and my sump pump is constantly pumping groundwater from my basement to a drain. I'm thinking of re-routing the sump into a rain barrel and using that water to fill the pond as needed. Has anyone tried this?

It might be wise to test for some unknown chemicals to see what you got

i would be cautious of fertilizers and pesticides....do you do either?
