Unexplained drop in water level

Hi, any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. We have a 670 litres above ground pond, less than a dozen mixed 'koi' type fish. Mid week last week, the pump stopped, just in need to cleaning out. I decided to wait till the weekend to clean out the pump and the filter. I switched them both off at the mains. On Saturday, 3 or 4 days later, overnight the water level dropped by well over 100mm. No obvious leaks, or damage to anything. We refilled the pond yesterday and now all is working fine and the water level hasn't dropped. We have absolutely no idea what can have caused this ! It hasn't been hot and the pond is covered. Any ideas please !?

So your pond converts to U.S gals equaling 176 gals? Not a big pond for koi!
No idea why your level dropped.

Hello and welcome! Can you post pictures for us? Smaller ponds will loose water (evaporation) faster than will larger bodies of water. Maybe animals, birds are also drinking from it…?

Every spring I’m convinced I have a leak somewhere. I’m always wrong. No plant cover and moving water makes for lots of evaporation even with cooler temperatures.

Um 176 gallons is ridiculously small for koi. In two years your going to have a big problem year three If you make it you'll have serious issues fish dieing.

@GreyOwl - when you said "mixed koi type fish" I hope. you meant colorful goldfish. You also mentioned you shut off the pump and filter for three or four days - not a great practice, but again not quite as troubling if you're talking about small goldfish.

Anyway- as to your water loss: if this happened with everything shut down, you can rule out the plumbing. I'll echo the suggestion to share some pictures and we can see what might be going on!

Welcome to the GPF! Please don't take the suggestions and replies you're getting as criticism. We love ponds and fish and like to see people be successful and enjoying the hobby!
