I am in the process of building my first pond. It will be 15' X 20' X 30" oval shape. I will be using a 45 mil EPDM liner. I was wondering if you can use like 30# roofing felt for a underlayment? I dont think I will have any problems where I am putting the pond as far as roots and rock go. But just to be on the safe side I thought I would lay something like felt down.
Is it compatible with the EPDM or do I need to put a layer of sand down between the two of them?
Thanks in advance

Used carpet or carpet pad has worked well for me. I have just finished a rework on my pond. I couldn't see that the carpet had deteriorated any in the 2 ½ years it was there. Also, cost; free for picking it up. I have a son in Lufkin that lays carpet – happen you are close he could get you all you need.

we used the firestone fiberglass underlayment and some scrap carpet. works great. i'd use whatever is cheaper. after all the underlayment will never interface with pond water.

I have used old carpet and carpet padding. Both work great. The roofing felt would would work also.

The only problem with a recycle place or even a carpet store, is with the out break of bed bugs, I would be a little concerned in handling used stuff anymore. We just pulled carpet from a rental, the renter brought in bed bugs, we black bagged it and put it out in the sun to kill the bugs.
Unless you know where it came from, and know they are bug free.

No matter how clean people are mites will live in any carpet or bedding even our queen has mites in her bed, not long ago she had a huge intruder that got past security (LOL)
