I want to plant a tree by my Lillie pond. I am not worried about what falls from the tree. That's just part of the joys of having a outside pond : ) I am wanting to be careful not to plant a tree with a large root system so it does not damage my rubber liner. any ideas?

How about a tropical palm tree in a decorative pot? No leaves or roots to deal with, provides a little shade and can be brought inside to 'tropicalize' your home in the winter?

You should be also concerned what type of tree as some are toxic to fish when they drop leaves or berries

Depending on the look you are going for, I like Stephen and addy's suggestions. I have a dwarf Japanese maple planted in an island in the middle of one of my ponds. Partly because it was already there and mostly because I liked the look of the tree, hanging low to the pond.

I have a Chinese Windmill Palm which is cold hardy planted next to my pond. They have shallow root systems and I have not had any problems w/it right next to my pond.

Laceleaf Japanese maples look great by pond and waterfalls in my opinion. In a lot of ways, they are more akin to bushes than other trees, so most of the concerns one might have about trees wouldn't apply to them.
