If you keep them in an aquarium which they do just fine in then you don't have to put them outside at all but if you have a pond then yes you would have to fence it in. They are actually raised in captivity and therefore it is risky put one in a pond really. The three I have in my pond were born there so thats why they are okay but I still have to keep a fence up to protect them from predators and if there is no fence then I can guarantee they will head for the woods and keep right on trucking. Hope that answers your question, if not let me know.they are so cute!! I wish I have turtle... but I dont have fence, so they probably wonder around and will be lost.... right? Or do they stay put?
Maybe in the future you can get a fence for the pond or maybe an extra tank If you ever need any info let me knowyep that answered my questions too bad. I have a 55 gallon tank but I dont want turtle in there. I want turtle for my pond lol. I dont have predator though, or not seen one anyway. but I know it'll not stay put :*(
The cat might be okay but the dog would be a possible problem. Now if they have a deep enough pond then they could get away from the dog but still would need an hour or two each day to bask in peaceI'm wondering how cool they'd be wandering around my fenced back yard. Not sure how the dog or cat would react though.

They would roam about 15 feet away from the pond to bask and as far as exploring they would go as far as the fence allowed. Just keep in mind that the fence should not have any gap underneath or they will go under it and escape.Well pup is inside in the day and he doesn't go in the pond at all, that's where all the frogs go when we come out in the morning.
That would be pretty cool to have turtles roaming my backyard!
What kind of dog is Buster? or is that the cat ?Hmmmm something to think about. I have no gaps, I got those covered when I moved in since Buster is an escape artist, or was. He doesn't travel far now.
Just hope the cat don't get online and read that lolBuster is an AmStaff, American Staffordshire Terrier. The cat is just an A-hole.. hahahaha
