Is that a small fish the common black hawk is closing in on ? Such focus in it's eyes!

Do hummingbirds winter in Costa Rica?

Yes it is a small fish, the surf leaves small fish on the beach and the black hawks and vultures come for them. Hummingbirds are in Costa Rica year round, depending on the area there are different species. Amazing to see so many different species, here we only have one.

Rob; did you photograph all these in the wild or some sanctuary/zoo? Would be really cool to actually walk around a d see hummingbirds this close. Did you have to use a long lens or did they pose for you?

As always, great shots.

All of the shots are in the wild. Some of the hummingbirds are at sugar water feeding stations but they are all wild. There are many hummingbirds in Costa Rica, with time you can get many shots. Some of them come super close to you. I do use long lenses. The hawks are tougher to get close too. The little Volcano hummingbird is just feeding in a wild bush. What is great about Costa Rica, depending on part your in you can see different species. While taking pictures of birds, I have had hummingbirds feeding 6" away at wild flowers. To close for my gear but awesome to see.
