Now, are they just dropping the bucket in the water and coming up with koi, or is someone putting the fish in the buckets? I couldn't tell.....

Those have been harvested from the mud pond and are being prepared for the breeding season. That video is at least a couple of years old, Just think how big they are now!

But are they just dipping the bucket (watch in background) in the water and getting fish?

No, there are Handlers down on the banks of the pond that are adding them to the buckets. They unhook one and hook up another to be lifted out. That way they rotate so not to slow the process down. These fish are worth thousands, They take a lot of care not to injure or stress the koi during transport. Did you know that Karashi are the closest to albino that are produced. Their eyes ere red like an albino, There are no White albino koi.

Certainly looks like they're just dropping it in and pulling out fish. Just don't believe that's what's really going on.

It really does look like they're just dipping the buckets in the water and coming up with buckets of koi, LOL!

Wouldn't have thought they were that expensive just looking -- but that's where being educated in "koi" is an asset. To me, they look, well, kinda washed out, blah-colored. What are they breeding for with these fish? I mean, what characteristics, etc?

I assume they are seining the whole pond and the fish are very concentrated at the pick-up location.

I think you can see the seine net, so I agree. There's just that point in the video where you see the bucket go down, but then it's out of sight. Next thing you see is a bucket coming up. I'm assuming that there are people down there who are loading fish and changing out buckets -- it just got my curiosity up 'cause you can't see everything going on behind-the-scenes.

Maggie, that's exactly what is going on. Karashi is an older line of Koi. Only a few breeders work with keeping the line going and when they do that's all they work on producing. They are a butter cream color, red eyes, and as you can see are known for growing larger than average for koi. Very similar to Chagoi as they also get really friendly with their owners. Here is a pic of one in a private collection. It belongs to Stephan and Mary in Florida. Taken from Koiphen as to give credit where it belongs.

Thanks, Larkin! Glad there are folks who work to keep old lines/stains alive!

Here is a pick of my two new BIG girls, 29" and 32" Just got them this morning. In comparison to what I have kept in the past these are huge. I've been keeping koi for over 20 years. Never grown one to this size in my life. I can't even begin to imagine how big a 40"+ koi would be like. That's how big the Karashi can get. Most Gosanke top out at about 36"-38". Very rare to see fish that large as it is. It kind of makes me think. How many fry were hatched and didn't survive some point in time versus how many actually reach this kind of size? BTW The smallest fish in the pond is at least 7" long or they would get sucked into the bottom drain.

Give you some kind of idea how big the big girls are. The Black Koi at the top is closer to the camera than they are. It's a good 14-15" fish The red and white and orange and white are a little bigger,

Hmm this makes me wonder... I have a female butterfly who has a very similar cream color over most of her body, with some highlights around the head and tail that come closer to a whitish color. I've never seen any other koi that match her color, and had actually settled on calling her a cream color. I had thought originally she might be albino, except she's lacking the red eyes, but the color tone is certainly right. She's been actively breeding for the last two years, and now this makes me wonder if I'll see something truly interesting come from her?
