I was getting ready to post a question to y'all about what things could possibly make my back yard smell --- bad. It's almost a fishy smell, kinda pungent and definitely not the least bit pleasant.
Over the weekend, i'd been wracking my brain wondering if the string algae could be doing it, or if something had possibly fallen into the pond. I cleaned, I dredged, I scooped out some string algae and lily leaves past their prime. Water was testing out fine. But still the smell was there. I had chalked it up to something must have died out in the forest.
I had been exchanging emails back and forth with one of my neighbors who has been on vacation for the last 1.5 weeks because one of his honking big cherry trees had fallen down and landed on their shed during one of our passing storms. He wasn't overly concerned, so I didn't make it my business to go walking his property looking for anything else. The roof was still intact. Heck, the big old branch is still laying on top.
Well, they just emailed me. A friend had gone over to check on their house, and there's a dead deer at the back of the property. I did a mental tally of the deer I usually see around here, and remembered that I hadn't seen the cute little baby -- still with spots -- in about a week. The mother, however, I see every day. Oh no.....
Curiosity got the better of me, and I found him =/ He must have freaked out when the branch fell and got caught up in the railing the neighbors have along the back of their property line (there's a ravine on the other side with a steep drop on the other side).
I'm so heartbroken. I wish it WAS something wrong with my pond, darn it! It was only last week I stood not 20 feet from the little one as he ran laps (7 in total) across our back yards, getting his footing under him and just having FUN. I do like my plants -- alot -- but I like my deer too. Especially the cute baby ones.
*sigh*
So, the pond is fine. No need to worry. hurray. =/
