I was getting ready to post a question to y'all about what things could possibly make my back yard smell --- bad. It's almost a fishy smell, kinda pungent and definitely not the least bit pleasant.

Over the weekend, i'd been wracking my brain wondering if the string algae could be doing it, or if something had possibly fallen into the pond. I cleaned, I dredged, I scooped out some string algae and lily leaves past their prime. Water was testing out fine. But still the smell was there. I had chalked it up to something must have died out in the forest.

I had been exchanging emails back and forth with one of my neighbors who has been on vacation for the last 1.5 weeks because one of his honking big cherry trees had fallen down and landed on their shed during one of our passing storms. He wasn't overly concerned, so I didn't make it my business to go walking his property looking for anything else. The roof was still intact. Heck, the big old branch is still laying on top.

Well, they just emailed me. A friend had gone over to check on their house, and there's a dead deer at the back of the property. I did a mental tally of the deer I usually see around here, and remembered that I hadn't seen the cute little baby -- still with spots -- in about a week. The mother, however, I see every day. Oh no.....

Curiosity got the better of me, and I found him =/ He must have freaked out when the branch fell and got caught up in the railing the neighbors have along the back of their property line (there's a ravine on the other side with a steep drop on the other side).

I'm so heartbroken. I wish it WAS something wrong with my pond, darn it! It was only last week I stood not 20 feet from the little one as he ran laps (7 in total) across our back yards, getting his footing under him and just having FUN. I do like my plants -- alot -- but I like my deer too. Especially the cute baby ones.

*sigh*

So, the pond is fine. No need to worry. hurray. =/

Darn so sorry, we love the deer that munch our plants, play in the yard and enjoy life.

Not a nice thing to find for sure - but that's the cycle of life.
It took a while for us to get used to finding the remains of live animals we saw the day before.
Many creatures will benefit from the remains of that fawn.

Thanks Addy and Mitch. Interesting perspective about how it will benefit may creatures -- I hadn't seen it from that angle. I totally get the whole circle of life thing, and do my best to be as nonintrusive as possible in matters of nature but have to wonder, if the (manmade) railing wasn't there, would he/she still be alive? Bah, I could drive myself crazy with all sorts of different "what if" scenarios. I need to stop, lol.

I guess if ever there was a silver lining, it would be that my pond is now practically spotless! =)

When it's hunting season around here, I put up a trail cam next to the animal parts that hunters leave behind .
You would be amazed at the scavengers that benefit from that. Nothing goes to waste.

Darn that is sad about the deer. I hate seeing dead things on the roads around here especially an animal that I've gotten to know and watch all the time. I want everything to live forever but it just doesn't work that way. You are right Mitch nothing usually goes to waste. Some hungry critter will use scraps to feed their little ones.

Very sad!! We had a baby crow in our yard for 9 days. The parents were guarding him carefully, and feeding him regularly. We watched him growing and getting stronger, hoping we would see him learn to fly one day. Then, on day 9... found him dead, without an apparent cause. The parents mourned for weeks. :( Very sorry to hear about the sweet baby deer. I hope more wonderful wildlife comes your way!

Sorry to hear. I hate finding dead animals. Even more sad when its caused but something human-made.

Thanks everyone for your kind thoughts. Now that the offending odor is gone, It's not quite as depressing to go outside anymore, which helps. This "polar vortex" we are in the middle of on the east coast makes for some BEAUTIFUL, spring-like weather, which greatly helps my mood as well. Thanks for listening!!! =D
