A simple question ( I think) - Do skimmers interfere with pond life? I am thinking particularly about surface living creatures like pond skaters.

yes they can, But there is a easy solution to help, Place a air stime about 6-8" out in front of the skimmer, this will bring stuff up from the bottom and allow the skimmers to help remove bottom debris, it will push food and insects away from the skimmer so they aren't sucked in but it does limit the amount that the surface is skimmed. kind of trade off.

I just pull water through ours when the leaves, flowers or seed is falling from the trees near the pond. OW it is off.

Laughing vertigo, mine is only on briefly, when the apple flowers are falling and the maple is dropping its seed. Where the pond is it appears the stuff blows over it not in to it. I had no skimmer last year and only had to pull a few leaves out of the pond, maybe 25 or so. Two huge apples and one large maple within 15 feet of the pond and bog.

The maple seeds are the worse, got tons of baby maple trees in the bog lol

25 leaves in a year ? LOL. Im guessng my pond is getting closer 25 leaves per hour. Maybe more than that if you count flower "leaves" whatever you call it.

Anyway, the original question was rather interesting. I never really thought of that. TBH though, even though my skimmer is on 24/7 and collecting a small bucket full of leaves and other stuff each day, there is no shortage of pond skaters and other insects on the water surface. Perhaps thats because my current makeshift skimmer is pretty much an open bath tub positioned just below the water surface, so insects can easily fly out again. Probably even "skate" out. Either that or they are "smart" enough not get suckered in.

Vertigo, here is one time you need to think about just how big your surface area is! LOL, Bet it doesn't suck very many skaters in! My pond's surface area isn't that much, take that it's 50% covered by lily and water lettuce doesn't leave much to be skimmed, Without the air in front of mine everything on the surface gets sucked in, food included! Now I do think most could skate back out as the fish swim in and out of mine along with the frogs all the time!
