One of my fish has not been right for a while. His belly is very swollen. Nothing else seemed out of the ordinary until the last few days. He has been listless and this morning I found him laying on the bottom barely moving.

I'm not sure what is wrong with him. His skin and fins look perfectly normal. It's just that his belly is really swollen to the point where it's hard for him to swim normally.

Is there anything I can do for him at this point?

I hate to see him suffer. If there is nothing I can do to help, is there a humane way to euthanize him?

Sorry to hear about your fish.....

I use clove oil to euthanize a fish (found in a Vitamin & Supplement Store) It is used in low doses as a sedative for fish and if overdosed it will quickly help the fish to stop breathing and then cause death. I normally use a clean fish only container with just enough water to cover the fish comfortably (using water from tank/pond) put the fish in the container and then slowly start adding the clove oil. I usually stir it up a little to help it mix in the water. Once the fish stops breathing I leave it in the container for a while to make sure that it is dead.

Just to add to the pea thing. They are supposed to be skinned peas. I have never had it work the few times I tried,it's difficult to get a sick fish to eat anything much less pea mush. Another good euthanasia tool is ice water,it's instant.

What I did was roll each pea in koi clay ,not sure if that is why it worked and made him eat the first one and then he liked them .Not sure how many farts it took :ROFLMAO:to make him feel better but the air stone made the water look like it was boiling .I did take out the air stone while he was eating .It could have been the extra oxygen making the water move so much also.Have to add it is funny people go fishing and catch fish to eat and don't care how they die .Strange thing

archimedes before you think of euthanizing this fish have a feel of the swelling it may be a tumor and thus un- treatable, it could be a form of dropsy that you could have a go at reversing, it could even be a bacterial infection , check he fishes Vent area if its red and swollen its a sure fire sign of it , you can then think about giving it medicated food as a form of treatment .
Never give up on a fish until your absolutely sure there is no hope for it and that it cant be treated @bettasngoldfish is correct with the oil of cloves option add 5ml at a time until the fish keels over and dies the article attached will take you through the various stages of Anesthesia :-

Could you post a photo for me to have a look at this swelling please ?
