Hello, I noticed a small koi about 4 or 5 inches, sitting behind plants and not swimming with the others or feeding much. I looked closer today and it looked like its eyes were kind of bulging, but other than that it looked fine. My water is testing fine and the other fish seem ok, any ideas?

Thank you

Hi:
Sorry to hear about your fish.
Can you be more descriptive about the eyes? How far out are they bulging? How about color? Any change in color? If you can photograph it, that would be great.
Also, do you have the numbers for the water testing? "Fine" can mean a lot.
If you can post those, we will have more info to work with.

There's a few reasons this happens. Run a websearch on Popeye (Exophthalamia) to narrow down the possible cause.

Sorry you lost the fish:-( I really dont have a favorite site to refer you to. Just do a search on the words "koi popeye" and you will get a bunch of results to read through. Popeye is more about the result of things gone wrong (second to something else), then a disease. It can be caused by many things from poor water quality (defined by actual test results), stress, bacterial/viral, etc ... It would be much easier for you to read a few pages to get an idea of what may be the most likely factors, and then come back to ask more specific questions. While you lost this fish, it really would be important to try to figure out what happend, as it may affect other fish in your pond as well in the future...

Sorry to hear that you lost it, watch the others to see if it was possibly contagious.
