Should I Intentionally Stir Up the Mulm?

Hello folks,

it seems like some various posts have mentioned stirring up the mulm intentionally so that the pump will push the dirty water through the biofilter. Is this right? (As opposed to letting the mulm settle and build up on the sides and bottom of pond).

I can't believe how quickly the mulm re-appears, even after completely draining and cleaning the pond 3 days ago. I guest its like dust inside the house.....

Hmmmm....there's something wrong with that picture. You are saying you completely emptied the pond and removed all the mulm and then the mulm reappeared?

Mulm is created over time...debris, poop, etc. Are you sure you don't just have algae?

Hi Koikeeper,

How do I know if its mulm or algae? It looks like a fine layer of brown "dust" that gets stirred up on the sides and bottom. Thank You.

you could stir it up and set up a fines filter even with its own pump to collect the silt. stiring small areas at a time and moving the setup to the desied area...

if it looks like "dust" or "dirt" it sounds like mulm. Once cleaned out, that should not accumulate within days.

How many fish do you have in the pond? Are you over feeding?

Scoop up as much as you can and then do stir the rest about to get it into the fitration. You've got to make sure to wash out your sponges or whatever is to catch the debris, tho.

To answer your question about how many fish.....um....maybe too many?

Our pond is approximately 1100 gallons. We have 28 goldfish that are about 2-3".

Is that too many?

What happened was that several years ago my husband bought a bunch of tiny feeder type goldfish, thinking that they all wouldn't live. And they all lived and became beautiful varied-colored big beautiful fish.

is you pond underground? Could it be that you have run off when it rains and it's external dirt and soil coming in? It's just really unusual to build up mulm that quickly.
