Hi all - rebuilding our pond and my thought process was to have 3 different depths 1 foot, 2 feet and 3 feet. My question is: is the 1 foot depth deep enough for koi? I am hoping to be able to feed them in that depth. I was going to do 30% at 1 foot 30% at 2 feet and 40 at 3. plus I want a couple spots for marginals at 6 - 8 inches. thoughts?

sorry but koi are pigs and if you teach them from the beginning they will eat out of your hand .One depth is better for cleaning .Plus koi sometimes jump during spawn time and can jump out of the pond .And koi destroy plants

I have an 18 inch shelf and regret no digging it right to maximum depth right from the edge to the middle. More water volume the better. If you want a pond big enough for koi (2000 gallons plus) then design it from the beginning as being best for the koi. I keep no plants anymore, not because my koi ate them but because I would just rather concentrate just on fish which are prettier then plants . If you have sufficient filtering and bio filter then plants aren't necessary for healthy water.
