Shade Cloth over pond

I have the EXACT same pond as "EGY",but my one is out side ..

My qestion is,,,i have 3/4 of it covered by shade cloth ~{black}~ as i have it under a tree as its the most level area in my entire back yard , to stop alot of the leaves etc from dropping into my pond to keep it clean...{leave free etc},but my koi seem to be always stay under where the shade cloth is..

Why would that be?

Advise is much appreciated and appologies about all the questions,,,as i just been out to feed them and its annoying..

I don't recall where you are from, if it is hot, they may be seeking the shade. My goldfish hang out under the plants when the sun is blasting.
Also the shade cloth gives them a sense of protection, they can "hide" from sky predators. My pond looks empty at times, all the fish are under plants.
