When you guys, and gals, talk about using scrubbies in your filters, is this what you mean? Should I use anything else in there with them? Do you need to have some mechanical filtration along with the biological? Or do these offer both?
i used a combination of those, 3Ms from Sams Club, and Flanders cut to fit blue (latex) furnace filters from Lowes.and Home Depot...any that are soapless should ber fine..you'll hear other ideas for media as well. but i can only speak on what i use...they perform excellant and last pretty long as mine are 3 years old and showing no signs of deterrioration...and have yet to clog either.... mine are in use 24 /7 / 365....they will provide mechanical and bio filtration
the 3Ms are finer than the dollar store ones so they go last the furnace filters go first....so the media gets finer as it goes. you can use the round ball ones too....
That's what I use as well. Koiguy, what do you do to keep them functional for so long? This is the first year I have used them (in mesh bags). What do I do to overwinter them. i imagine they will be filthy if I take them out. Do you bring em in, clean em, etc?
Hey Big Red, you're not far from me at all... I believe that koiguy uses them year round, he uses them on his indoor pond in the Winter. I am also wondering what to do for the off season.
well....if youve got to shut everything down for the winter anyways wash em or rinse them out and store them til spring...i do use mine indoors too, on the wintering pond so i just move mine twice a year!!
Thanks. Guess i'll have to clean them. Dirty business.
KoiRUS, I'm literally 15 minutes from you. BTW, sweet icon...one of the greatest movies of all time.
Koiguy, do the furnace filters actually say Latex on them? I've seen a blue one at Lowes 20x30x1, says washable synthetic I believe. Also says something about no microbes will grow on it. Just want to make sure this is right.
