sand filters

I am trying to better educate myself on the different types of filters and I ran across this article about how sand filters are the worst thing you can do for your pond.

Anyone have an opinion about it? Any experiences (good or bad) with a sand filter?

I would think that back washing a system with sand would launch all the sand out to the settling tank too.
