Red pond water

I was away for 3 months and came back to find my pond a reddish colour. I thought it might have been from fallen leaves, but then I also read about red algae. I emptied the water out (it is very small pond) and have filled it with clean water, and the fish seem happy enough. I had the fish in a bowl with the old water, and just tipped the bowl sideways so they could go into the bigger pond when they wanted to. they have been going in and out.
