I am thinking of adding rain chains to my gutter system. While sitting on my deck feeding my fish, I thought maybe a rain chain from the overhead cover might be interesting. The overhang goes quite a bit over the pond.

What are your thoughts on this?

I know some use there gutters to fill there ponds but when I look in my rain barrel it is filled with grit and gravel fro my only 8 year old roof shingles and they were a better brand shingle .Plus sometime will see a haze of oil when the roof gets really hot and we get a passing shower .Plus if you get a torrential downpour all that water splashing down may cause a problem .I had one bad down pour rip off my downspout and then my gutters and they were put up with the hangers that screw into the facia of the house and are now after putting them back up with both the facia mounts and the roof mounts .I found out that both mounts work better together than just one kind

I used to have my one gutter drain into the pond but when it rained hard it was just too much water and I was concerned about the turnover of the original pond water with the rainwater, sometimes I think it would have amounted to a 50-75% changeover. It was a good size part of the roof that drained into it. I always like the idea of rainchains but I don't think they would work for me. I would look at how many sq ft of roof you are talking about draining into your pond and figure out if you get an inch of rain what does that do to your pond water then you could easily figure out what a 2 inch rain would look like and do to your pond.

What kind of cover would it be coming from? If not a shingle roof I think it would be fine. metal roofs and sheeting roofs pose little issue with pollutants. It's not like a great amount of water like a gutter would supply. Could be a really neat addition.

Ok, you have convinced me, no rain chain in the pond. I have and Acadian style roof with patio cover butted next to the house. Too much water coming from the shingle roof before it gets to the patio cover. But I may put them else where in the back yard.
