When a pond is dug, do you excavate straight down and set the rocks/boulders on the perimeter of the hole at ground level, or do you create a ring around the hole at a certain width and certain depth to place the rocks on?

Thanks for any input.

I understand there will need to be a berm surrounding the pond in either case.

I have a shallow area, less than two inches deep, where the liner comes over the edge, it is from 12-20 inches wide. The water, dependent on the level, can be from one to two inches deep. On that edge I have rocks placed to cover the liner, the liner comes up over the edge, under the rocks then up past the rocks. It hides the liner edge very nicely, being so shallow I have not seen a big collection of muck. When I had a ton of fry I kept the water level higher to give them a nice hiding spot.

For sure have a small berm to path rain water runoff away from your pond.

You can do it both ways. But if you do the rock submerged be carefull what find of rock you line the edge with. While flagstone looks nice it could become a problem during spawning time which gets rough. Like addy said having the rounder rocks in different sizes give small fish a place to hide plus the softer edged wont hurt your fish.
