If you use one and put the pump in there isn't there a greater risk of the pond shutting down due to the water level being too low as opposed to sticking the pump at the bottom of the pond?

I would assume that it would only take a small change in water level to shut down a pond with a skimmer

It would seem so, a lot are sold that way. Wonder if they come with cut off switches?

You can get a low level float valve that will shut the pump off when the water level is low, I got one that plugs into the outlet and the pump pulgs into it (Lowes for $12), It the level gets to low the pump shuts down until water is added, I then installed a Horse trough ( Tractor supply for $13) water refill valve that will slowly add water when the level gets to low, That was a little trickier for me as I also had to rig it into my rain catch container with a pump that switches on when pressue is needed.

My skimmer has a 3" water level going in. I wouldn't worry unless you had leaks.

I put the float on mine but also have a hose that runs from the basement out that has a fill switch on it as the water level goes down the switch puts water in the pond .I think I got it at harbor freight or tractor supply do not remember .2 better than one just in case. But then with winter I turn the hose off and still have the other
