I'm in the design stage of my pond, I'm planning for around 5000 to 5500 gallons. I'm going to install a skimmer and a bio filter waterfall. My question is; is it better to have two pumps? one on each filter, or is one larger pump in the skimmer feeding both okay? My personal thought is two is always better, just incase one goes out. But I was talking with a landscape/pond guy and he says one is fine.

better with 2 pumps one goes out you have back up .I bought laguna for the energy costs and bought 2 of them .A 2900 gph using 104 watts and a 960 gph one using 32 watts .I tested them on the watt tester and when they find there sweet spot that is what energy they use .Bought them off e bay from webbs water gardens with 4 year warranty

I'm of the opinion that a pump should be run for each of the mechanicals, having two 55gal filter set-up, I run a separate pump to each filter. I've really only done so in order to increase the flow over the waterfall. I wasn't happy with the aesthetics of a single pump supplying the waterfall. I also found that the increased flow from the second pump provided aeration in that the waterfall flow provided for more turbulence at the base of the falls.
