Hi Guys,

This is going to sound like a stupid question i guess, so be patient with me...

i'm planning on rebuilding my filter in Spring, so as part of that i've just measured the flow rate at the inlet to the current filter.... 50000 l/h (11000 g/h).

This is much higher than i expected (That'll teach me not to have measured it before), and i suspect much too high for the gravel filter that i'm planning.

My question - if i stick a ball valve in the line and regulate the flow like that, do i risk damaging the pump in any way...? i.e. if i cut the flow by 50% is there too much back pressure in the pump?

cheers,

Andy.

Yeah, i thought about that as well... i could just return part of it straight back into the pond... or use it to supply another water feature.... not sure yet.

Our pump gets restricted slightly through the UV-C and doesnt appear to be harmed in anyway it draws through 4"pipe wwork from the pond throught to the filters and this drops to 2" to pass the pump .
Whhat is the flow rate you wabt to reduce the flow down to ?
Beautiful fish by the way Andy

Hi Dave,

Thanks. The Koi have grown well this year :)

It's currently running at 50000 litres/h, but i want to get it down to a fraction of that. I think i'll follow Dave's advice and split it.... i can use the second part for a water feature or something.

I see you're in Plymouth... hope you guys aren't affected by the bad weather...?

cheers,

Andy.

Andy read my thread on the rain my friend, when you split it wont you have problems jiggling them about we tried tto split a pipe before when we kept indoors and we could never quite get it right .
Ours is 3500 ltr per hour suppling a 1,000 gallon pond

Hi Dave,

I read your post. Typical summer weather for Plymouth, isn't it? ;)

Joking aside, i'm originally from Devon, and i well remember how the storms were, but even so everyone back there is telling me how bad these have been this year. My flight back for xmas almost got cancelled on the 23rd because of the weather, and the drive down to Devon from Heathrow was crazy. Glad you're all ok.

You mentioned you got a book on Fish Diseases for xmas.... any chance you could post a link to it?

cheers,

Andy

As long as you restrict the pump on the output side of the oump you will have no problems.
