Before I panic, my main pump shut down. Now I tripped the breaker and it goes back on but then in a while shuts off again.. Could this be electrical, or does the pump need attending to? Any help would be appreciated...

Is it plugged into a GFI? first thing i would do is try plugging it in somewhere else and see if you trip that one, that way you know if the pump is the problem of the outlet you are plugged into.

I had a pump that was doing that. It was overheating from pulling too many amps. Try putting some shade over it to see if it continues to shut off, just don't block the airflow to it. As electrical circuits gets older, they will degrade and pull more amperage. Most modern pumps have an over amperage circuit built into them to prevent fires. The over amperage circuit shuts the pump down when they over heat or draw too much current.

It may be the pump. There was a member who was having the same problem. It ended up being that the o-rings in the pump were bad and it was getting water inside the pump causing it to trip the breaker.

.. Problem is the owner before me has run the electrical underground and to a switch in the basement.. So I have to flip the switch to turn it on.. Could it be that it just needs cleaning? (the prefilter).. I just flipped the breaker and it's working but I'm sure it will shut off again..

Joylaine if it does trip your breaker again I would suggest as Ididntdoit says and plug your pump into an extension cord and then plugging it to another outlet on a different breaker to see if it is your pump or something else with the electric.

I can't. It's hardwired to an electrical switch.. :( I can't even get at it...I am going to clean the prefilter, look at the pump and try again. If it still does the same thing, I guess I'll have to call an electrician...

I have a pre-filter on mine. It gets gunked up and I have to take the cover off and clean the filter and then it runs pretty good again. You want to make sure you clean it with either pond water or declorinated water.

Well I did that today. Cleaned the prefilter.. Lots of gunk. I flicked the switch and it started but soon enough shut off.. I noticed sparks in the circuit breaker.. Guess I need an electrician?.. Hope it isn't too expensive..

I would stop use until its fixed. A pump is not worth starting a fire in your home.

Is it an external pump or submerged? Sparks kind of make me think that water is possibly causing the line to ground out. Possibly a seal leak since it does it only after running awhile.

If its an external pump, is there any water around it? Signs of a leak?

Good luck.

My pump is submersed. I stopped this pump and hooked up the backup. I did clean the prefilter and checked the pump.. It seems to be fine. It appears that it's electrical.. I have called in an electrician and he will be coming tomorrow after work.. Crossing my fingers.
