I have been trying to figure out the best way to protect my fish. I'm not exactly thrilled with my current netting arrangement. Spent today putting thisView attachment 55569 together. Does anyone have an idea of how to protect fish and still make the pond look natural? I was considering using fishing line and attaching it from my flower box to the other side. Problem was there was nothing on the other side to attach to. Thought of making a bulk head or pier, however it was getting to be a bit much. THANKS!

Theres a few products on the market which are supposed to deter predators (one has a pir sensor which attaches to your hose pipe and sprays a burst of water if it detects movement around your pond). Personally I wouldn't trust them. A net may look untidy/unnatural but thats what I use.

Another thing i've heard about is placing a small hand held radio around your pond playing music. Suppose to deter a heron. Just something i heard on another site. Could be complete bs

Just being proactive. I am missing a fish, have been for a little while. We do have red tailed hawks flying around and are not too far from a lake with herons.

Unfortunately you build it they will come and snack on the fish......... I hate nets, but found a fishing net that is not that obvious, easy on the eyes, have it around 3 feet over the water, 5 inch weave.

We have tons of fish, would not even really miss a few, but do not want heron beak holes in the liner, and it is my job to protect those little finny things.

Addy1. When you say it's 3 ft over the water does that mean the net does not reach the ground at any point? I'm asking because I just redid my netting temporarily and have it suspended about 3 ft over the pond too. I am curious if herons would fly down walk under the net and get my fish. I don't want to lose any fish or get liner damage.

I think it would be cool to have a retractable cover (kind of like the old window blinds) that could be unrolled at night and rolled up in the daytime.

Hmm. Need to think more about that one.
:)

I have the netting so it is over the pond, high enough I can get in without too much effort, on the sides, it drapes down close to the ground, but not all the way down, where the heron could walk in. My walk out spot. They like to stalk up to the pond, standing straight coil their neck for the strike. Having the net up makes it so they can not do the coil and strike, in theory............ They have not come back yet this year, they do fly over every day morning and evening. I watched them stalk my pond for hours to learn the best way to protect the pond from them.

They won't go under the net, I have had them fly over a fishing line boundary, i.e. fishing line like a fence, also had them go through it.

My temporary solution gave me the idea to use shepherds hooks to keep the netting up high and allow it to drape down around the pond. Did away with the PVC fence so now it's easier on the eyes. Photos to come!
