When creating a sloped beach style bank I envision some size of small stone or gravel covering the exposed liner. The water will go up the beach slope about a foot or so. After that point there will be a drop off. Hence the challenge. Whatever media is used to cover the beach slope must be stopped at the underwater drop off ledge. Unless there is already a product I can use to keep the media in place I have a couple of ideas and would appreciate your comments.

  1. Run a bead of waterfall foam along the underwater ridge to create a barrier.
  2. Adhere flexible black plastic flower bed edging to create the barrier. */**
  3. Adhere a continuous row of small stones high enough to create the barrier.

At the base of the beach slope where the drop-off will occur, create a soil lip as high as the gravel depth will be. Cover with the liner and you are good to go.

A beach really isn't a good idea. The water won't be deep enough for plants and impossible to clean with gravel in it. Not to mention it is a perfect spot for predators to get to your fish. You might want to consider a 6 to 10 inch deep shelf for plants instead and leave the liner bare. In a year it will be covered withe "stuff" and you won't notice it.
