Does anybody have any idea (guesstimate) how much 1/2" poly strapping I would need for a 300 gallon Skippy filter (Rubbermaid stock tank)? I won't be putting it together until next Spring, but if I can find deals between now and then, it would be great. I just have NO idea how much it would take.

Thanks!

If you are using poly strapping, it is not a Skippy filter. Skippy uses scrubbies...

Okay, sorry. I was using that as a generic term for biofilter I guess. I will be using a 300 gallon stock tank filled with poly strapping, and maybe some form of pad or sponge under the strapping for some mechanical filtration. What would you call this? Just a stock tank biofilter?

Thanks for the correction. I'll keep on learning.

Bio filter is fine.
On this forum, we have a lot ot styles. I used the Doc Filter, which is my own design, it uses either plastic irrigation tubes or plastic fencing. Many use the Skippy design, some use a varient of all of them.
The least expensive and easiest to maintain is the Doc Filter. It can be built for less than $50 after you get the 55 gallon drum and takes only seconds to clean, with no maintenance ever.

Do a search on ebay for "samuel poly strapping" Seller's name is topline433. I'd provide a link but ebay is recognizing me so I'm not sure copy/pasting the link would work.

We bought a 9900 ft. roll from topline433 a few weeks ago to fill a 300 gal. plastic tote. Described on second and third pages

https://www.gardenpondforum.com/cutting-poly-tubing-all-afternoon-t6197.html

I just kept spooling strapping off and shoving it into the tote. Unless you do something to mash it down the strapping will settle in fairly loosely but I don't think that's a problem. If you take a look at Doc's own website you'll see that the poultry netting doesn't come close to filling the vessel.

The strapping does float. At least it does when new. Don't know if that'll change as stuff grows on it. I tossed a few chunks of PVC pipe on top of the strapping. The PVC pipe has weight in air, but some buoyancy in water, so it seems to be acting as a good auto-anchor if you know what I mean.

We still have at least half the spool left unused.

Oh, yeah, the Samuel strapping is embossed, and it does not have adhesive on it. Just what you're looking for.

Since we haven't come up with an official name for our filter, you can call it whatever you'd like.

I'm leaning towards christening it the "WTHHTTOPTKTPS" filter, which stands for "What the heck happened to the original plan to keep this pond simple?".

lol i so know what you mean !!
oh and if you put your strapping into some net bags that will make it easier if you need to take it out to clean

your filter is a skippy filter if its a stocktank, and if the plumbing is plumbed with a downpipe and teed off to 2 swirl bars...you can use any media you like in a skippy..they merely suggest or reccommend the floor scrubber pads. the stock tank and plumbing make it a skippy style not the media. adding the flush valve is a big improvement to their design tho, even if its not neccessary as they say, its still nice to have the option.

Yes, as stroppy mentions, some of that cheap bird netting makes it easier to pull the strapping out and hose it off.

We had some laying around, so tossed in a layer of the netting before spooling off the strapping. Thanks for reminding me, stroppy. :)

LOL When you call it a Skippy most folks familiar with stock tank biofilters will understand regardless of the actual media used. I use strapping like material and call it a Skippy.....

I keep my Springflow media in bird netting and when I clean the stock tank I just agitate the material with my hands and then pull it out and put it into the main pond while I clean out the stock tank.

I don't hose it off because my water is chlorinated and also has chloramine and I figure hosing it off will likely kill the microbes. Besides, just the agitation seems to clean it out real well.

The reason I toss the media into my main pond while cleaning the stock tank is to keep the microbes alive. One time while I was cleaning the stock tank I left the media out of the water for about 5 minutes on a warm sunny day and that was all it took for the microbes to die off. It took a few weeks before the microbes grew back and got back into the game.....

You can easily add a hose bibb right before your filter, and wash your media with pond water, like I do. You'll have to put a ball or gate valve between the hose bibb and filter, so you can get enough pressure in your hose. https://www.gardenpondforum.com/mem...tweaking-begins-picture548-2010-08-25-19.html

Think that'll display the pic, anyway. Doesn't show the actual hose bibb, I used a 3/4" lever style valve.

Yep, it does show the pic, you can see the 2" ball valve I used.
