Good morning! I purchased a pot of Parrot's Feather and it must have 8-9 stalks . Can I split them up into different pots? The pot is filled with mud. Can I bury them in pea gravel or is the mud better? The man who sold it to me said it would be fine in shade. Did he know what he was talking about?

Thanks!

It prefers sun, would leave rooted in the mud until it takes off. Put some pea gravel over top of the mud to control the mud.

Thanks Addy. My stock tank will arrive next week, so the plants are soaking in totes. I've had them three weeks and that parrot plant is growing at a fast rate of speed!

It will grow in part shade but I think it will need some sun to stay alive. You have it now so just see how it does and let us know. You are in warm Cali so maybe it will grow fine in your warm shade. I planted mine all together in a big wide pot and it loves it in the clay kitty litter. It travels from the pot all over the place. It had roots when I planted in that stuff tho.

It's a pretty plant. Does it have any relation to the floating kind I tend to get in my pond? I was given an iris a few summers ago and it seemed to come with unexpected, complimentary duck weed and something I was told was "parrots feather" which floated in short strands.

Yep it can just float too but I found here in my big pond that it does better for me rooted in a pot where the water is calmer. Stays in one area better and away from the turbulent water fall and aerator. Otherwise you can just throw it in and it will grow like crazy. I threw some in a small bathtub pond and look what it's done below.
The taller plant in the upper part of photo is Mare's Tail.

Here are two of my ponds with PF, came back great after winter. The second pic is PF that was not supposed to survive here. It is on its second winter. The ponds are full sun.

Ah! The only experience I have with these are the unrooted ones that seemed to live for months simply floating. They came attached to another plant I was given!

I hate using them floated. I prefer them rooted. Floating plants attract mosquitoes and the bigger fish can ignore the small mosquito larvae.
