I have a small pond containing about 2 dozen coloured fish about 3 inches long . My problem is I use a pump to agitate the water as a means of of providing oxygen. The water is crystal before I do this but is soon polluted with a very fine dust like dirt. Is there any means of preventing this, please excuse my ignorance on the matter but this all new to me.

Good morning! Could you give more details about your pond and include a picture or two? Depending on how small it is, I am thinking you could add some sort of small bog filter. Are you familiar with OzPonds on Youtube? You should check out his videos. He has some wonderful ideas for ponds of all sizes!

This substance is suspended in the water, right? You'll likely need a pretty fine filter for that. A sieve with a very fine mesh or a little sand and gravel filter would probably do it. Bog might work, but I think pea gravel alone probably still has too much space to let fines through. Might cut it down a lot, though.

If it isn’t already, raise your pump off the bottom by a few inches. I also use a pre filter in my small pond, like this: Aquascape Submersible Pond Water Filter | 95110,Black

Actually, that's a much better first suggestion than mine. Do those things first and if it's still a problem, move on to finer filtering.

Could the fine dust be pollen? It sounds like that to me if it's just on the surface.
Is it just floating on the surface or suspended throughout the water?

Just as a note. You may know this, but I thought I'd mention this...

If you're using a pump to agitate the water for oxygenation, it's best to agitate the surface as much as possible.
Directing the pumped water down under the surface is less efficient. You need to stir up the surface.
