I have two potted cat tail plants that I took out of the pond this winter to make more room for the fish. Two weeks ago I put them in a 5 gal bucket filled with water near the pond. Today I found a thousand swimming creatures in the pails. They all look like tiny fishes. Could fish eggs have been on the plant and now hatched? Are these insects? Please let me know? RDK

Im guessing toadpoles as they just started hatching around here. Toads, frogs and fish lay their eggs on plants. Toads eggs look like a small translucent ribbon with dots of eggs spaced apart equally. Mosquito larvae look more little more like shrimp than fish and don't swim like fish. Without pics its hard to say for sure.

Went to the CT state agricultural station today with a sample of these things and found out they were 100% misquitoe . They do swim like fish at a time and then surface for air. This is what I was told. RDK

then you're about to get bit!

If you feel you need to keep that plant in that 5g drum, at least buy mosquito dunks from Home Depot/Lowes so you can prevent further breedings!

you can mix it with your food right now. I use it as an early preventative. Use it for two weeks and then you can go to regular food...and save the rest in case you need it.

Cattails don't have to be in standing water, actually they do better with just wet feet. Without standing water you'll have no mosquitoes and no dunks to buy. This is true for many pond plants.
