How “small” are we talking about? I put mine sorta in the middle, but not sure there is a hard and fast rule. As in your other post, you were concerned about too much water movement. If it’s a small aerator, in a small pond, maybe close to an edge? Actually, my aerator came with 2 air channels, therefore, 2 air stones. When I say “middle,” my pump is at the opposite side from my outflow. The air stones are between these 2.

I put mine on one end so the other end is calmer, fish can choose what they like for the moment. I also bought a diffuser that attachés to the airline to make the bubbles tiny and spread out more. I bought mine at Webbs but I bought one bigger than you would need. They have lots of sizes: https://webbsonline.com/Item/Matala-3-Disc-with-Weighted-Base-MPN-MD-3W
You can find diffusers at many other places. Or you can just use a small air stone on the end of the airline for a small pond.

I put one (two diffusers) in the area of my pond that is farthest away from any action and the other opposite of the waterfall (since the waterfall adds so much turbidity anyway)
