New pump for my pond

Hi there,

please excuse my ignorance, I know little to nothing about ponds, but through circumstance have come to be in charge of my mums pond which was there when she bought the house.

First, to describe the pond itself. It's a lined monstrosity, about 7 feet at deepest. I know this as I've been it while empty and at 6'3" I'm looking up out of the pond like a rat trapped in a hole. I do need do some measurements, so these estimates are rough. I'd say it averages 10 feet wide, by 25+ long. I've calculated at that's nearly 50 thousand litres volume. Does that seem incorrect?

The pond has a series of filters and a huge concrete filter. It also has an upper pond which the water used to be pumped up to, before coming back down into the pond proper.

The problem is that last year we decided to get rid of the pond/carp we'd inherited. We did the first bit, giving the carp and ponds pump to someone, but when we talked to builders, we realised that it would be impossible to fill in the pond as it was too deep and getting to our garden is incredibly tricky. Not the cleverest move.

So, now we've got a huge pond with no pump and some angry goldfish. We also miss the sound of running water.

So, I'd like to know (assuming my estimates of volume are fairly accurate):
  • what kind of pump we get
  • how many litres per hour it needs to push (is it the volume/2 for a pond with few fish in it?)
  • good places to get pumps in the UK
  • any advice for installing the pump and maintaining it/the pond
I am sure we could get an expert to do it, but I'd honestly like to learn myself so that I understand how everything works.

Your help would be much appreciated.

Kind regards,

Nemo.

Welcome, Nemo! You'll get lots of help here. I'm just a newbie, too, so all I can do is marvel at the challenge ahead of you -- and admire you for wanting to learn all you can! There's a lot to learn, but oh, so well worth it!

Just ran your numbers and assuming you have the 7' depth, you are correct about the volume -- that's roughly over 13,000 gallons, US. Get us pictures, if you can, and go over to the "INTRODUCTIONS" area and say, "HI!"

Hi there,

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures at the moment as work and life have been somewhat chaotic. I talked earlier to someone who knew about the pond (he helped the original builder when constructing it) and he actually confirmed it was more like 11,000 gallons, and suggested that I needed to push at least half that if not a little more every 2 hours, and that I'd need a filter pump to do this.

Apart from 'check the internet' he couldn't give any advice on actual pumps. With this in mind do people have any recommendation as to where to shop in the UK, and what brands/models of filter pump would be appropriate for pushing somewhere between I'd assume 6-8 thousand gallons per 2 hours?

thanks.

if you're estimates are correct you'll need to pump about 25-27k liters per hour... is the pond 7 feet deep all around? even if not i would go with the highest rated pump for the 50k liters..not sure if you want to use one or two pumps...but go with one rated to move pond volume once or more and hour..don't forget about head height and other water features when determining pump volume
