Hi everyone, I have a pond in my back garden it's 3000 litres, I have a few small koi gold fish and orfes, I visited Tesside Koi, a great supplier of fish and equipment! I have been bitten by the bug and decided to make my pond larger to a size of 9000 litre (2000 gallon) to house more larger koi. The problem I am having is I have been reading about water temp, and how I shouldn't change to much of the water. As it will drop to a lower temp and kill my fish, is this true? I would of course use the 3000litres of water in the existing pond and top up with chlorine treated fresh water will this be ok?

Many thanks

The real danger is a rapid change in temperature and more so in the down direction.

In nature fish swim between water that differs by a few degrees all the time. The is a few degrees from top to bottom in most ponds.

Larger fish seem to be more sensitive.

So if I used the old water and slowly added new water over a day or two would this be oka?

There is nothing in the old water that is better then what is in the new water. Use new water but age it for a few days!
That is true however I think the reason to use the old water is that it will be the temperature that the fish are used to and adding new water in slowly will not change the temperature vastly.

Until we know what he is really doing we are just guessing. And what you said only makes sense if there is a temp diff. No point in guessing let the man tell us.
