Ok I know this is NOTHING for all you gread ponders out there...but I went from a 55 gallon patio pond...and I just picked up my 275 gallon pre-formed MacCourt pond. I think I have found a happy medium. I had the big huge pond in the ground YEARS ago, but I got tired of fighting all the snakes.I am out in a rural area and they really come to ponds to live... All the food and water they need....I am installing it about 6 inches in the ground and the part sticking out will have 3 rows of those big bricks around it. I think my 3 gold fish and 2 koi will love it. I love all the ponds I see on here...they are all beautiful.

6" in the ground, 275 gallon, 2 koi. plus goldfish, and you live in North Carolina. Not sounding very good. That's a small pond for anything but baby koi, not near deep enough for the fish to survive the winter. and even though going from 55 gallon to 75 gallon sounds like a huge jump. The koi WILL outgrow it at some point. Goldfish would probably be a better fish to stay with but still you'll need to make some kind of changes or bring them inside during freezing temps. I would even worry about the preform pond itself getting damaged if there is a hard freeze.

hi kathymalaspina, Welcome to gpf and good luck with your project. I agree with fishin's comments above. I have a 600 gallon pond and only keep goldfish. A good rule of thumb is 10-20 gallons of water per inch of fish. Fish like koi can get very large and it will be hard to keep your water quality good. I lot of people recommend 1000 gallons of water for the first koi. If you have them already you may want to consider going bigger with the pond.

Welcome and i go to NC all the time and it is almost always 10 to 15 or more degrees warmer there than here why did you not go with just a smaller liner pond and just go deeper and try to keep your pond shaded .I know I bought a liner in the reidsville NC lowes and for 15x15 it was 59 dollars .Not sure how far down into NC you are but I go down to Greensboro a few times a year and it is really hot there ,love shopping there ,they have a nice pond store
