im getting ready next year to put in a pond against the side of my house. i was going to dig out enough space for a 500-1000 gallon pond. i have never taken care of a pond but i have had several fresh and salt water tanks.

My question is the area i live in (outside of philly) has red clay soil which is prone to causing puddles and flooding basements. this maybe a stupid question but what u use to get the extra water out of the pond in case of a bad rain storm? i was told via google not to use a sump.

my major concern with this pond s flooding.

Welcome to the Forum.
There is no reason why you can't use a sump pump or any other submersible pump for your flooding.

If the pond could elevated a little you could use a overflow and there would be no need for a sump.

I have a small submersible pump I use to pump out excess water with my pond. The soil in Denver has a substantial amount of clay as well.

You should start paying attention to that side of the house during heavy rain storms
If the water does build up drive a few stakes in the ground for the high water mark
Then build your pond about 4" higher than the stakes and you wont have any water problems
