Hello everyone,
I have a question,,I have a lined pond in my yard,,and discovered that we have on our property,,the whole yard is clay.
So for a test I dug near my pond in the back,,which is about 2 feet deep and 6' 4'.
I added water to the whole I dug and the water stayed halfway permanently. So I add more water each morning to top it off
and it stays! This pond I want to create is this,,,open one end of the pond (the end furthest from the drainage end where it drains into a stream)flatten and bury the liner under the clay,,and make the pond larger. If the water were to stay relatively full, I don't see why this wouldn't work. It's for ducks,so It's dirty and muddy all the time ,so I'm not worried about the murkiness. Let me know your input, and if anyone else has done something like this wih a natural clay pond.
The clay content in the earth is at probably 60% or more..
Thanks!

The first really dry spell could cause most of it to be sucked into the ground. Hopefully it works out for ya. Also, the first post appeared to be today. Sometimes it takes a couple of days to get a response. Glad to see the ducks like it though!

Looks just fine for the happy ducks and I've also heard they work well. Even if you do have to add water if it sinks down the ducks won't mind waiting for a free refill :)

Thanks! Well we're on day 3 and I only top it off in the morning,,whichj is what I did anyways with the lined pond. Somehow it would would need a littl top up each day,,so my routine hasn't changed! I am a bit worried of a dry spell,,but we're near the Ontario border in Canada, and hopefully won't get a dry spell too bad.
I do find it extremely muddy,so this am I have the hose in there with the drainage open and will leave it on a couple hours,,see if it clears out the looses stuff. I'm ok with it murky but I don't want the loose mud hardening and making it shallow.
I shall keep you all posted :)
I added plants and rocks, loos nicer now

Show us pix of your new plants and the ducks w/ your new look. Bet they love the pond. I had ducks when I was a kid and they loved their kiddie pool!

Excuse the quality as these are from the 60's:
