Mixing mortar

I have never mixed or used mortar before. Anyone have a materials list and directions to use it in and around a pond?

I buy the ready mix mortar in the bag
mix it in a wheelbarrel...dont add to much water,,chop it with a hoe or shovel
i like mine to be like a thick shake

I use it to make a smooth level edge around the pond

is it going to be in contact with, or in the water, if so there is some special mixes to reduce leeching.
