I have recently lost 2 koi from my new pond. When I say lost, I mean lost, gone, vanished!

My thinking is either cat (I have one who takes interest in looking I'm at the fish but doesn't look over interested). Or Heron.

My pond is raised (UK btw) and I have the floating plastic guards near the edges. I had my 2 corners not well protected so now added some netting.

What's people's thoughts? Would a Heron fish from the side? Should I put fishing wire round the top edge?

Sorry to read this. Herons tend to like to land and then walk up to a pond but I could see them land on the edge around yours. Also keep in mind other furry creatures such as otters will make a meal out of a Koi quickly. Not sure where you are in the UK but am surprised your cat would be the culprit but if your Koi were friendly and coming up to the edge I guess a car could grab one depending on size. If it’s a heron there are deterrents but a net truly is the only one that works close to 100%z

They will land in the pond if they think (how I don't know) that it is deep enough. Before my net they usually stalked up to the edge, taking over 30 minutes to get there. I had a plant island the heron landed on it, pushing down the net. So plant island gone.

Very persistent and smart birds
