i think I lost 4 of my large goldfish. I went out this morning and the ice is still to thick but I see 4 of them frozen in the ice. Darn I wish I would have bought a heater. I feel horrible.

Is this the 4000 gallon pond? Your in pa md area? So am I and my pond has been thawed for days now. Anyway I would think your fish died from something else then got froze in the ice when they floated. 4000 gallon pond could go for quite awhile frozen over with no fish loss.

Goldfish are known to survive for extended periods of time frozen in ice.

Sorry about your fish. I don't use a heater but I do pump air into my pond all winter so there is enough O2 in the water when the top freezes over. I agree with above comments that is was probably something else.

I don't use a heater, just the pond breather. Keeps a nice bit of circulation going.

The pond is totally melted so I am going to go look for the fish. No floaters or bodies seen. I did see a few, 2, small fry that looked dead in the 1000 gallon pond. Which is normal, some are just not strong enough to survive. I float some liner to give them a hiding spot and they stay under it in the big pond. The fish in the 1000 gallon pond hide under the waterfall rock. I do my best not to disturb them until it warms.
