Pretty turtles! How big are they?

Here, in the southern US, my box turtles usually disappear into "hibernation" [brumation is the actual term] sometime in November, though they're starting to slow down around now. But they dig into the soil. Not sure how & when water turtles react to get ready for winter, but would assume they'd be similar (anyone??), except they stay underwater.

Turtles are EXCELLENT escape artists, but you said your area is escape-proof. Hmmm. Maybe predators? You might just have to wait until spring to see if they show up.

One of my boxies mysteriously disappeared 2 seasons ago -- she never emerged in the spring. I never found remains and still have no clue.... But my main suspicion involves owner-error :(

Hello
Well my Turttles have started to slowdown now but are not in full hibernation.
In captivity they really dont fully hibernate fully as I will see mine come up threw the winter they don't eat but they will show there selves.

But it is very true what Mmathis said they can escape with ease and they are very smart.

I have had one get out could not find him and I searched everywhere he must had been gone for a month
One day walked out and there he was.

Good luck

I'm glad one of the turtle returned. Hope someone can help with how to nurture it back to health!
