I have a pond that is 900 gallons and has a rubber liner. I have cattails, lizard tail, yellow flag, pickerel weed, about two types of water lilies, a lotus, and arrow arum in the pond. All are in pots. Recently I have realized that the water in my pump/skimmer area drops to about 50% of recommended volume and I hear the pump sucking in air. I am wondering if I may have a leak. Is it recommended to remove the water plants over the winter? I question whether after 4 years of leaving my potted plants in the pond may have allowed the roots to penetrate the liner as the roots have burst through some of the plastic pots. Any insight is appreciated.

Disregard any possible liner damage caused by aquatic plants. Not a problem. How long does it take to lose this amount of water and is the rate of loss uniform from day to day?

I typically check about 24 hours after I fill the pond up and the water level always returns to the same level (roughly 5/6 filled)...leading me to believe there is a leak.

If the water level stabilizes at the 5/6 filled mark then that is where your leak is. Carefully look around the inner edge of your pond at the water level. You will eventually find the spot.
