I included a pic from the day before that I had taken because I was so happy buds have broken the surface of the water.

The buds seem fine, the lily pads all have hail damage.

Most of the other plants were damaged also and leaves looked sliced.

You might think you are just seeing the reflection of water on the leaves in the first 3 pics, but it is a network of tears from the hail if you look closer.

Hopefully these leaves will all survive............but it looks pretty critical and damaging to their vasculature.

I think they will survive but the holes won't heal. The plants will just make more pads. You could cut off some of the holy pads and maybe that will allow the plant to send more energy to the new pads.

I would not worry about it, not as pretty as undamaged, but pads. I never worry about pretty pads.

i'd cut half the pad off myself the plant will regenerate which will also make the plants take more nutrients from the water .

The plants will be fine. Water lilies constantly send up new pads as the older ones fade. You could remove the most seriously damaged ones if you want for esthetic reasons, but I'd leave the majority of them until you see a flush of new pads coming up.

We had another hailstorm yesterday.

I will indeed cut off the pads if they look like they are dying. Some of my lilies have over 20 pads. Yes I counted :).

I did buy a fancy clipper on a pole to be able to cut the dying pads at their base. I could make my own fertilizer tabs inserter, but this trimmer on a pole was beyond by technical skills. So far it's worth the $.

How long are buds above water before they bloom? 3 are above water for a few days and not open yet. I'm checking at night too in case they are night bloomers.

Thank you all for your comments!
