I saw this http://www.lagunaponds.com/lagunaeng/filters/plounderroundfilt.php?link=156
at a pet store on clearance today and it is only rated for "500 gallon ponds" per Laguna.

I have a DIY bio-filter using a 70 gallon stock tank and only want this to be used as a pre-filter with a 1900 gph pump. I am assuming that they are rating 500 gallons if you used this as your only means of filtration, but this should work as a prefilter using coarser media right?

My pump has a small little cage that protects it from debris but I've seen it clog twice already and 19" of surface area is larger than that small cage on my filter.

This would be placed on the pump input. Right now the pump cage is only a 4x4" cage with a few slits in the plastic cover to proctext the pump.

This filter was designed to use in the bottom of a half-barrell or similar size patio water feature, which it does quite well. Remember that these features are set up for the summer, then torn down until next year. As for using it as a pre-filter, just take out the pads and let the mesh hold back the leaves, etc. that you want to strain out.
