I don't know if it's related to sun exposure, but koi can and do, change colors. I was pretty surprised some years ago that my orange and black koi turned black and white - practically over night. She's my avatar pic:)

Goldfish will do the same - we had an all orange comet go white overnight last summer. We wondered if he had a big scare! Now he's slowly regaining some orange patches. Not sure if there's a reason it happens, or just nature's way of keeping things interesting!

In reality its all down to the koi's genetics , we bought an Utsuri of a friend called Matt some years ago , then all of a sudden we started to see changes red stared appering along its flanks then later on its forehead nowadays I'd say it was more of a tancho goshiki than an utsuri , so you dont know what your going to end up with and as Liska says its natures way of keeping things interesting (y).
I doubt very much this has anything at all to do with exposure to the sun at all :)

Dave ;)
