I'm in indiana & its running in the 50's. My water is starting to turn funky so I put in the heavy duty pump & also hooked up the uv.Now that I have it all in ,Im wondering if I'm jumpin the gun. Also, I was just running a cheap submersible pump and the top of my water is looking oily. I took it out as soon as I noticed.Think it"ll hurt the fish?

Take some newspaper and put it on your water that will suck up the oil

Hi farmgirl, I have read the uv will actually kill the good bacteria. I might wait a little before pluging it in. Mine is off right now. Why do you think your water is turning funky? Is there a lot of organic material in it?

U,V doesnt kill good bacteria (or atleast not enough to matter much)...most good bacteria colonizes hard surfaces in the pond and filter. bad bactreria is free floating. that said, if you do add beneficial bacteria turn off your U.V for 24 - 48 hours to give the bacteria a chance to find a home

If you sized the uv to get the algae it will not kill the bacteria. If sized to be a sterilizer it will kill algae and bad bacteria not the good. Igo along wiyh koiguy
